Chapter Eleven

David watched her go, not liking the look in her eyes.

Glancing to the gardeners, he asked. “Your names?”

“Jeffery and Jason, sir.”

“See that one of you get these out of here please.”

The men nodded.

“Lately this house has been full of action,” Frank mused.

“And none of it to do with finances,” Steve added.

“You’re glad about that, I’m sure,” Frank said to David.

David sighed. “I’m glad the financial end is going so well. It does enable me to continue in the job I’m in.”

Steve studied David. “And when are you going to give that up and help us in the mission? You’re rich. You don’t need the job, except to find yourself, and I think you’ve known who you are from the beginning.”

David shot a look at Steve, ignoring his comment. “I’m not giving up this job until we get all of this mess straightened out.”

Those around David sobered.

“Any word on Marcus?” David asked, watching where Angelina had disappeared into the bathroom.

Steve sighed. “I talked with Inspector Washburn this morning. Nothing new. They’re following up all of the leads.”

David nodded.

Steve turned to the people gathered in the hallway. “Back to work everyone.”

Slowly they dispersed. David ran a hand down his face. “The longer we don’t hear anything, the more likely it is we won’t find him alive, isn’t it?”

“I wouldn’t say that,” Ted argued.

David studied Ted.

“He’s right,” Frank said. “There’s been no ransom demand so it’s possible that someone is simply holding him for another reason.” The implication was that obviously the kidnappers weren’t after David’s money, something David hadn’t considered until Frank’s remark.

Steve nodded, his features dark. “But more than likely, they’ve killed him.”

David glanced sharply at the door where Angelina had disappeared. “I won’t believe that. We need Marcus.”

“God will decide who we need and when,” Steve said wisely. “And though I refuse to accept that Marcus isn’t coming back, I think it’s a possibility, and if it happens, well then, we have to trust that God will see to His ministry that He called Marcus and me to.”

David sighed. He didn’t want to think about the ongoing nightmare of his missing friend. “Since we’re up can someone fix breakfast?”

Steve nodded. “We sure will. Will you be all right seeing to our missus?”

David nodded.

Steve and the others left. David slipped back into his room, washed up, and pulled on his boots. Just as he was buckling his belt, he heard the bathroom door open.

Angelina saw him as he stepped out of his room. He crooked a finger and she strode down the hall, once again in control and in charge. She walked past him into his room, and, with only a quick glance around, she didn’t stop until she reached his window overlooking the front entrance. He thought about picking up his clothes from the night before, then shrugged, knowing that in her one look she’d catalogued everything in his room and had already seen his discarded outfit tossed on the floor.

He crossed to the dresser and began packing his pockets with his wallet and other items.
